Of Colleges and Hedge Mages

Magic in Morinar is a strictly controlled practise with many learning institutions scattered throughout all the land. Strictly controlled by both the faith and the monarchy the general trend is that any person exhibiting signs of magical potential is first cut off from their family line; meaning they cannot inherit and then sent off to either a college, or a temple of Boccob if they are religiously inclined. It is in these sites of learning that prospective mages begin practising their skills as well as their intensive studies to prepare for their future of most likely being an advisor for some lordling.

Mages that are either in the training process, or have graduated and taken an official position are watched very closely by the templars lest they begin abusing their powers for their own gain. It is known however that some mages simply prefer the trapping of the adventuring life, a fact which drives the templars mad, as they seek to keep track of these “rogue” mages. Unfortunately however there are inevitably a few mages that become corrupted by the power which they wield and thus must be hunted down by the Templars, lest they cause widespread havoc amongst the kingdoms.

On the other side of the spectrum while college trained mages are tolerated and accepted in society, there is a large amount of suspicion and hate associated with those who do not follow any college’s teachings. Feared by the general public and hated as uncontrolled mages by the Templars, regular witch hunts and investigations are the norm in more rural areas. Even the slightest rumour of a hedge mage’s existence is enough to have an inquisitor knocking on one’s gates, something that no official ever wants to deal with.
